Sororities are a Home away from Home Sororities can help personalize your college experience by offering a scholastic support system; hands-on experience in leading committees, managing budgets, interacting with faculty and administrators, exposure to potential careers through educational programs and discussions with alumni; the opportunity to give back to the community through service projects; and close friends who will cheer you on through successes and provide support when times are tough.
Scholarship Greek women at RIT take great pride in their level of scholastic achievement. The panhellenic grade point average continually exceeds the university all-women's average. Sororities place great emphasis on encouraging, developing, and maintaining academic progress. Different Panhellenic chapters on campus provide tutors, mentor programs, study hours, and incentives to promote academic achievement. Additionally, time management skills of sorority women improve as they work to attain desired scholastic goals while meeting their chapter responsibilities.
Leadership Sororities exemplify democracy in every aspect. New members live and learn to work within these communities. Officers within each chapter are elected to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. These officers are assisted by members serving on committees and by alumni who act as advisors. In addition, many national organizations have regional and national leadership conferences where students can learn a variety of leadership skills. Sororities provide a solid foundation in leadership training that prepares members for the demands and responsibilities needed for the future. In addition, many leadership camps and retreats are offered free of charge to members in sororities and fraternities, giving students a chance to travel the country and improve the leadership skills.
Community Service RIT chapters support a strong tradition of service to the RIT campus as well as the Rochester community. Each year, sorority women donate thousands of dollars and hours of service to various charities.
Each sorority focuses on its national philanthropy while also serving local agencies as well. Because of strength in numbers and organizational qualities found in sororities, these women achieve great success in aiding their community. Every chapter supports its own national philanthropic organization.
Social Life For many students, the Greek social life helps to make college a more fulfilling experience. Greek organizations provide a calendar of social activities including formals, tailgates, homecoming, swaps, singing and dance competitions, and other special events. Sororities can offer more of a family atmosphere and go beyond ordinary friendships - often lasting a lifetime.
Athletics Greek organizations sponsor teams to participate in various intramural sports and in other fraternity and sorority philanthropy tournaments. Some of these sports include flag football, soccer, basketball, tennis, softball, dodgeball and water polo.
Lifetime Involvement Many of the friendships you develop in college will be the lifelong friends. The role of the alumnae as advisors, national Greek officers, and consultants is substantial. Lifetime friendships expand beyond individual chapters to include all members of the national and international Greek Life community. Alumni organizations help students network for potential employment opportunities after graduation, and keep in touch through newsletters, correspondence, meetings, and special alumnae events.
